I am fairly certain I will go there. I am waiting for the last set of admits to roll in (although they probably won’t change anything a lot), it would still be interesting to see how things go.

Some things I am happy I did this admit season:

  • Not get addicted to thegradcafe. I visited a few times to organize meets with other CMU admits at the open house but I am so happy I didn’t do any of the “scoping” bs which is frankly just public masturbation. I think this is vital to apping since it makes you focus on your app and not worry about the competition.
  • Focused on checking if the dept. culture is a good fit. I think CMU has a go-getter approach to things which I like (not that I am some expert at this but whatever).

Those who would exploit the bugs in the definition of probability to produce ridiculous answers to fermi-type problems.

Q. What is the probability that there is life on Uranus?

A. 0.5 – either there is life or there isn’t.

Q. What is the probability that the earth will be destroyed because of the LHC?

A. 0.5 – either it will be destroyed or it won’t.

And so on.

The source of this trolling is contained in the naive definition of probability :

P(A) = |E(A)|/|S|

And it pisses me off. But I guess that means that the troll’s mission has been accomplished.
